Steven E. Mortrude, P.E.
Principal / Co-Owner / Senior Structural Engineer
Steven Mortrude is a professional structural engineer registered in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. His more than 22 years of progressive and practical experience in the field of structural engineering is bolstered by seven years experience as a structural draftsman.
While working as a draftsman for Centennial Structural Engineers in Boston and for Sumner Schein in Cambridge, MA, Mr. Mortrude pursued an education in engineering. He graduated from Franklin Institute of Boston with an Associate in Architectural Engineering degree in 1983, transferred to Northeastern University in Boston, and graduated with a B.S. in Civil Engineering in 1991.
Mr. Mortrude began his engineering career in Green Bay, WI, as an engineer with Brander Construction Technology specializing in forensic engineering and new construction design for 3 years. Next, he worked as a design engineer for Flad & Associates in Madison, WI, for 8 years and then for GMA Engineers, also in Madison, for 1 ½ years. Mr. Mortrude was employed as the Chief Structural Engineer and Structural Department Head for Northeast Engineers & Consultants, Inc., in Middletown, RI. Mr. Mortrude started the structural engineering firm Aquidneck Consulting Engineers, LLC with Mr. Hancher in 2004.
Throughout his career, Mr. Mortrude has had responsibility for the design and analysis of a wide variety of structural projects, ranging from simple wood-framed decks to complex foundations and multi-story steel framed office buildings. He has practical design experience with wood, steel, masonry, concrete, and composite materials.
Douglas G. Hancher, P.E.
Principal / Co-Owner / Senior Civil Engineer
Doug Hancher has fourteen years of structural design experience. After graduating in 1979 with a B.S. in Civil Engineering and a minor in Architecture from Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute, in Troy, NY, Mr. Hancher was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. Commander Hancher retired from Active Duty in 2001 after 22 years of service as a Surface Warfare Officer, a theater strategist for the U.S. European Command, and as a Naval War College professor.
Mr. Hancher completed an M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering with a concentration in structures in May 2003 at the University of Rhode Island (URI). His Master’s Degree research project focused on wind load analysis and design techniques. He became licensed as a Professional Engineer in February 2012 after passing the Principals and Practice examination (Civil with Structural Depth) in 2011.
In June 2002, while a graduate student at URI, Mr. Hancher began his professional employment as a civil engineer with Northeast Engineers & Consultants, Inc., in Middletown, RI. While there, he worked on over 40 projects that included wind load resistance analysis and design, site investigations, wood and steel structural framing design, conventional and coastal foundation design, sheetpile and retaining wall design, forensic structural deficiency investigations, and Coastal Resource Management Council permitting for coastal construction.
In December 2003, he and Steven E. Mortrude, P.E., founded Aquidneck Consulting Engineers, LLC (ACE), in Middletown, RI.
Since its establishment, ACE has completed more than 500 projects of various sizes, including: structural inspections of existing buildings, ranging from ordinary homes to mansions on Bellevue Avenue in Newport; structural designs for repairs, additions, and renovations; and complete framing designs for residential, municipal, and light industrial buildings. ACE’s project inventory includes numerous design and/or analyses of coastal and standard foundations; retaining walls; forensic structural investigation; timber, steel, concrete and masonry framing; and wind resistance analysis and design.
