A Note for Builders Concerning Southern Yellow Pine:
On June 1, 2013, the American Forest & Paper Association and American Wood Council reduced four design values of Southern Yellow Pine (SYP) by 20-30% based on findings from destructive testing of visually-graded full size samples by the Southern Pine Inspection Bureau. The National Design Specification for Wood Construction (NDS) has published an addendum to the 2012 NDS Supplement that is applicable to all earlier versions as well. Because the NDS is a referenced standard in the baseline International Building and Residential Codes (IBC & IRC), these values must be incorporated in all our future designs. ACE specifies SYP primarily for exterior applications because it can be pressure-preservative treated without incising. Builders may see an increase in the size of SYP members in our designs compared to prior similar projects as a result of the reduced SYP design values.
